Bette Midler’s bold, brassy style has made her a force of nature in the entertainment world. What many of the actress/singer’s fans may not know, however, is that the Divine Miss M has also become a force of nature in helping to redevelop New York City’s most environmentally unfriendly public parks. “We know that dirty, trash-filled, unsafe parks make people feel bad not just about the parks themselves, but about their own communities,” Midler said recently, commenting about a land use planning project for the Harlem River waterfront. “When they see how great a park can be, it lifts up entire neighborhoods.” Lifting up neighborhoods was just what Midler had in mind when she founded the New York Restoration Project (NYRP)—a “conservancy of forgotten places” —in 1995.
