The Moving Parts of a Railroad

Repair and Cleaning Locomotive and railcar repair and cleaning is the dirtiest part of railroading and is the area under RCRA regulation. Cleaning cars results in contaminated wastewater that is treated on site and RCRA materials are removed and treated. The materials include a range of solvents, waste oil, and oil sludge. Repair facilities produce the same wastes as well as lead and acids from battery maintenance. Painting operations at the facilities produce volatile organic compounds, degreasing and paint removal solvents, and waste metal. These are currently regulated through with RCRA regulations, although because many of these facilities have been in use for decades there are frequently large areas of contaminant-affected soils in and around repair facilities. Also, such shops sometimes were moved to different areas in a yard. www.railspur.com photo   UP Photo Roundhouses have a rare, but unique place in railroad redevelopment because their unusual construction and design offer…Log In to Read Full Article
