Thoughts on Environmental Accounting Environmental accounting in the early1990s was a footnote on the year-end report. Interpretation and implementation of environmental legislation over the past decade has changed the landscape of financial reporting. The former environmental footnote has now become an integral part of financial reports. Full disclosures of real and contingent (potential) environmental liabilities are required under GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). Environmental laws affecting business today hold companies and organizations liable for the release of pollutants/toxins into the air, ground, or water. RCRA and CERCLA have increased the CPA’s responsibility for documenting environmental liabilities. There is a division between private and public companies. In private companies environmental issues most often arise at sale while a public company must continually keep investors and regulators aware of these issues because they are a matter of shareholder value.
