Michigan’s emerging high-tech industries are growing out of the state’s strengths in manufacturing. Now, the state that put the world on wheels is home to sophisticated new industries, building on a manufacturing base enhanced by generations of investment in research and education. Two of these emerging industries are advanced manufacturing and information technology. The integration of computer technology and traditional manufacturing resources continues and Michigan’s advanced manufacturing companies are helping lead the way from assembly line to on-line. Sophisticated software systems integrate design, prototyping production and supply chain management leading to shorter product development cycles and increased manufacturing efficiencies. As this industry evolution takes place, the buildings housing the day-to-day industry activities also need to be redeveloped.
