Reading, ‘riting and… remediation?

So far, the moniker for one of their newest schools has proven to be a very inconvenient truth for Los Angeles school officials. The Carson-Gore Academy of Environmental Sciences, an environmentally themed elementary school that opened Sept. 13 in the Arlington Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, was named by a school committee to honor environmental activists Rachel Carson and Al Gore. But the fact that the school campus is a remediated brownfield has caught the attention of other environmental activists, who've had a field day pointing out what they decry as the irony of the situation. The Carson-Gore Academy: Before and After "This school is being occupied and being used as a school while [groundwater] contamination remains in place," says Jane Williams, executive director of California Communities Against Toxics, based in Rosamond, Calif.
