Greener Cleanups Gain Traction with an ASTM Standard

Green is everywhere, including the remediation industry. Regulatory agencies, responsible parties, consultants and technology vendors are expressing interest in integrating green and sustainable concepts into cleanup projects. This is exemplified by the EPA’s interest in the subject, which has published a plethora of green remediation documents on its Clu-in.org website. Other groups, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Air Force Civil Engineering Center, the Interstate Technology & Regulatory Council (ITRC) and the Sustainable Remediation Forum (an industry group dedicated to the practice of sustainable remediation), offer a myriad of green and sustainable remediation guidance documents. However, despite these efforts across the industry, until ASTM published its Standard Guide for Greener Cleanups (E2893), there was not a standard approach for remediation professionals to follow or a practice to define a greener cleanup.
